How was it established that the most agile and stealthy - a cat - knocked over the candle? The owner has ultimate responsibility for the lit candle. Maybe the dog [Moose] was chasing the cat [Veronica :-]? The difference between people that want cats as pets versus those who prefer dogs is....?

Of course dogs DNA will create OCD genes."The Biology of Belief"author,Dr.BruceLipton's experiments, and that of other leading edge scientists, have examined in great detail the processes by which cells receive information. The implications of this research radically change our understanding of life.It shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology;that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts.

The zeitgeist movement sounds like it ought to be renamed after another movement....... :-] Carbon pawprint? I think I would imprint some other "paw" on any climate change looney that started with animals! [growl and woof in my best bull terrier]

Man's best friend could be one of the environment's worst enemies, according to a new study which says the carbon pawprint of a pet dog is more than double that of a gas-guzzling sports utility vehicle. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp... ...Supermarket food will be clearly labeled to show its carbon footprint as well as country of origin and animal welfare standards as part of efforts to transform the British diet. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/...

One can have faith that"all that is"all animals and materials are connected. The Zeitgeist Movement generally concludes that concepts of nationalism, government, race, religion, creed and class are false, outdated distinctions.Such concepts seek to divide people; they are not positive factors contributing towards human progress.Lets recognize irrelevant structures, that are instruments of paralysis to human progress. Yes,faith...to update the human value system to be supportive of this world view.

Then your idea of what is religion is different than those of faith - you have just explained a form of mysticism. Explainations based on the thoughts of enemies of Judaism and any religion which derives its foundation from Judaism would not be considered valid.

Whether I want to bond with other animals or read a lot about them, it seems, it is religion. Many say the etymology of religion lies with the Latin word religare, which means,"to tie, to bind." This seems to be favored on the assumption that it helps explain the power religion has. The Oxford English Dictionary points out, though, that the etymology of the word is doubtful. Earlier writers like Cicero connected the term with relegere, which means "to read over again".Sounds philosophical to me?

Anyway - this is a philosophical discussion and strictly speaking, religion does not belong here.

Leanne - I am not arguing with you - I am disagreeing with you and substantiating my answer. In the Judaism any form of graven image is forbidden based on the commandment. I have no idea who made up those tribal depictions but in the main archeological museum in Jerusalem there is nothing like that where the tribes are concerned - there are no acheological artifacts at all other than the torah.

With respect Leanne - those emblems do not originate from any Jewish source because it would contravene the commandment forbidding graven images - such as the Lion and the deer. Judaism is a religion that has no being - human or animal as a symbol.

I'd like to add that had they stopped between an elephant and a its calf, the car would have been crushed and tossed like paper.

Then you would enjoy the Knysna forest. It is in South Africa and alongside the whitest and softest beaches. Incredibly beautiful the elephants herd of Knysna live in the forest. Hiking through the forest they are rarely spotted. Naturally there is a folklore story which claims that they are white elephants. Take a look at this little episode in my home country of South Africa http://www.dailymail.co.uk/...

"Elephants communicate in a complicated, sophisticated language that scientists are trying to decipher and compile into the world's first elephant dictionary. When we heard that this is all happening in one of the most *magical* places on Earth - a remote clearing in Central Africa where forest elephants, the rarest, most mysterious, and most threatened member of the species congregate - we simply had to go." - Bob Simon's opening statements, on one of last nights, "60 minutes" segments.

    •  Wonderful format, and appreciated getting to serve as a moderator. But I was disappointed, though, that I could not provoke more discussion of the Dish of the Day scenario

We didn't make any philosophical breakthroughs, but we had some fun discussion. The one reservation I have is that it would have been nice to have some ethical vegetarians/vegans in my groups to increase the diversity of viewpoints!
    • Nicole R (+1 guest)
A lot of fun, well-run and interesting topics! Very lively discussions.
    •  The philosophy of dogs was a really great topic. I had a fun time.
    •  "We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creatures through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth."
    •  Lack of Political topics made this a less overly contentious, more stimulating evening. I'd suggest more of the same.
    •  Mixed views, and thoughtful conversation. As usual, the organizers put together a thoughtful, funny, poignant list of questions.
    • Brian J (+1 guest)
It was amazing and highly satisfied by the discussions. I wish more people had come, but that never detracted from the experience. 5 stars! :)
