Introduction

I want to enjoy conversations with introspective and thoughtful individuals about a large variety of topics, from a point of view of seeking knowledge.

How did you become interested in philosophy?

I always was I just didn't have a name for it. Tried to explain everything in the world with math, then physics, then I found philosophy and it was what I had been searching for: a never ending search.

What topics interest you the most?

Mind: qualia, continuity of personality, mind-body dualism, the nature of the mental landscape, free will Ethics: Love, moral skepticism, faith, virtue

Can you summarize your philosophical outlook in 50 words or less?

Know thy self, question everything, believe your answers, and always be ready to be wrong.

What Al is saying about this Meetup Group

Where else would you get great debate about a wide variety of topics with knowledgeable people with open minds and a good spectrum of view points? Huh? Where else?

You must be signed in to post a Greeting.

Al Mark, yeah, I traded for a hard-cover of Alice in Wonderland. Great book. It's not just an exercise in irrationality though, but a linguistics thesis as well.

Al We still don't really know what rationality is, but David-Joe, for at least logic, it's merely a system of rules....

Al Put me on the spot, will you? I'd have to get all Socratic to try to find a definition for rational. It's different from logical, I assume, because logic is quite strict....

Al Now we're getting into pet peeve territory for me: overbroad definitions. What would be considered unreasonable? What would be considered irrational?...

Al From the Greek. Philo meaning love. Sophia meaning wisdom. Literally: love of wisdom. I've met scholars who say philosophy is the study of formal arguments. I think that's too narrow. I think love of wisdom is pretty much the perfect definition.

Al I didn't realize we had such subject matter experts in this group! How would anyone know that babies are born purely emotional? Are logic and emotion the only two methods of interpreting experience?...

Al Mark, that wasn't my question. David-Joe claimed that "capitalism" embraces "defense" while all other systems embrace "force". I'm trying to understand what he means by this.

Al Trying to get an understanding of your point of view. And instead of capitalism perhaps you mean "free-market economy" or "unfettered market"....
